American Dog Rescue Awards Its 2010 National Animal Welfare And Protection Award To Salt Lake County Animal Services

SALT LAKE CITY, UT (February 17, 2011) – Arthur Benjamin, Founder and President of American Dog Rescue (ADR), presented Salt Lake County Animal Services the American Dog Rescue’s 2010 National Animal Welfare & Protection Award at the Salt Lake County Council meeting on February 15, 2011.  Salt Lake County Animal Services distinguished itself amongst the dozens of animal service organizations that ADR works with by increasing adoptions and decreasing deaths by the hundreds; eliminating the practice of euthanizing pets simply because an animal was “out of time”; by adopting the creed, “no critter that can be nursed back to health or adopted is put down”.   Innovative new programs have resulted in a 92% increase in the number of dogs and cats saved through adoption, rescue, foster and rehabilitation programs.  With euthanasia rates now at less than half the state average, this agency has almost reached it’s no kill goals.

Mr. Benjamin said, “In this current economic environment, it’s a rare experience to find an organization with a strong leadership base that provides a public and private partnership of magnitude and support for the welfare of animals in its jurisdiction.  County citizens have proven that vision and leadership are key to solving the problems of homeless people and animals.  In the words of actress Tippi Hedren, "If they have feet they should run, fins they should swim and wings they should fly" and those of Mahatma Ghandi, "Humanity's moral progress is judged by the way it treats its animals".

Our citizens have been clear that they want unnecessary euthanasia of lost pets to end at government shelters, says Salt Lake Mayor Peter Corroon.   Animal Services responded and changed direction to provide services that reflect our community values.   The achievements of Salt Lake County Animal Services are a great example of what an agency can accomplish with dedicated staff, volunteers and the support of the community.

ADR also presented an “Outstanding Achievements” award to Shawni Larrabee, Executive Director of Salt Lake County Animal Services and a Certificate of Appreciation to the Mayor and County Council for their support.
